How to Become a DST Doula

In order to ensure that DST doulas are highly trained and experienced working with pregnant and parenting teens, we have an extensive mentorship and continuing education program for the doulas who work with us. To begin working with DST, all new doulas must be trained through a recognized doula training organization (i.e. DONA or ALACE) and meet with the Executive Director of Program Operations, who coordinates the Doula Program. This meeting is an opportunity for the Director to describe requirements and processes of becoming a Doulas Supporting Teens doula.

Some of these requirements and processes include:
1) New DST doulas entering the program are volunteers and go through an extensive mentorship program with an experienced DST mentor doula,
2) They must complete a minimum of 2 births with a mentor before they are eligible to work with clients on their own as a primary doula, and
3) After attending at least two births, show consistent attendance at monthly continuing education meetings and complete at least one advanced doula workshop (all provided by DST). At that point, an evaluation process takes place to see if they are ready to work with DST clients on their own.

Teen Helps with Sling After serving as a primary DST doula for a period of time, the doula coordinator meets with the primary doula to discuss growth within the organization. If she demonstrates a strong aptitude and passion for working with pregnant and parenting teens - and a high level of dedication - she then will have an opportunity to move into a Mentor role. Continuing education does not end after the initial training period, monthly continuing education meetings and bi-annual advanced doula trainings are required for any doula practicing within DST, including Primary and Mentor Doulas.
